The aim of the course is to train supervisors of doctoral students to integrate the teaching of Responsible Research Practices into the supervision of their doctoral students. In this manner, supervisors can help create conditions at an early stage for these practices to be sustainably established in the research process and accordingly, contribute to ensuring the quality of research. The course covers different topics ranging from issues of research culture to social skills to the conveying of Responsible Research Practices and the critical examination of the role and self-image of the supervisor. The workshop employs a variety of facilitation techniques that require active participation by participants.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to, among other things:
- Communicate to doctoral students the importance of responsible research and how to conduct research in an ethical manner and in accordance with Good Scientific Practice requirements;
- Actively and consciously apply key interpersonal skills (listening, giving feedback, coaching, managing expectations, among others) for supervising their PhD students.
The curriculum of the training program was developed within the framework of the research program Academic Research Climate project and its introduction was scientifically monitored. The course is now also offered regularly at other institutions, for example at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers.
