Questionable Research Practices

Jan 27, 2025 | 02:00 PM c.t. - 04:00 PM

Prof. Jesper W. Schneider (Aarhus University, Denmark) will introduce and discuss the concepts of questionable research practices and misconduct. We will discuss their alleged widespread use, the suggested reasons why, and the presumed effects they have on the science system, not least their role in the so-called replication crisis. Examples will be given, and we will discuss suggested solutions to the challenges. The talk is based on this recent paper published in PLOS One: "Is something rotten in the state of Denmark? Cross-national evidence for widespread involvement but not systematic use of questionable research practices across all fields of research."

The lecture is part of the BUA module “How science works - Current discussions on open science and research quality!”.
Guest lectures by nationally and internationally renowned researchers are part of the event series.

The BUA Module

The module consists of a seminar and an exercise  (“How science works - What do I need to know and be able to do to become a scientist?”), both offered at the Institute for Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and is open to all students of FU, HU, TU and Charité. The module will take place this winter semester on Mondays from 14:00 (c.t.) to 18:00.

Further information about the course and the possibility to register can be found here. The teaching module discusses among other topics scientific misconduct, research evaluation, scientific careers and scientific publishing. Students from different disciplines are invited to reflect on the requirements for quality and openness in their scientific fields in different interactive formats, to present and discuss them in a multidisciplinary group.
