Forms of Belonging: The Making and Unmaking of Transnational Identities Across Afro-Asian Diasporas in Berlin
Anna Frehiwot Maconi, Julianne Chua, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Anglistik und Amerikanistik
Inhalte
How do Afro-Asian diasporic communities in Berlin articulate and shape transnational ways of being and belonging? Our collaborative research project aims to widen the orbit of methodologies and practices by engaging with transmissions of diasporic knowledges via myriad forms—radio, food, walks, film, poetry and zines. Through field trips and presentations, students will delve into diasporic practices that embody aspects of transmediality, makeshift aesthetics, archival glitches and site-specificity within the context of Berlin’s quotidian landscapes. We will visit community radio stations, exhibitions and cultural spaces that explore polyphonic, expansive and genre-defying forms of publishing. With a collaborative and participatory approach, we will co-curate and experiment with various ways of sharing our research, culminating in an exhibition to be held in July. Bachelor’s and Master’s students from diverse cultures, disciplines and language backgrounds are encouraged to participate.
