Globally, school counseling is increasingly being recognized as important for children’s well-being. However, little research has been carried out among nations in the East where a majority of the world’s population is concentrated yet where school counseling has recently started gaining momentum. That is why the aim of this seminar will be to learn how to carry out a systematic review of the literature, specifically on school counseling in Asia, in order to identify resources, barriers and needs of this profession in that part of the world. 

Combining theory and practice to foster critical research skills and autonomy, the course will be organized in two phases. In Phase 1, students will be introduced to the background of the study, namely, school counseling in East-Asia, South-Asia, and South-East-Asia, then will learn about the most recent methods for conducting a systematic literature review of high scientific quality. In Phase 2, they will semi-independently complete the main steps of the review. Results will then be collectively discussed and students will present their findings by means of poster presentations. With this course, students will be able to learn how to independently carry out an important step in quality scientific research, gain valuable skills in cross-cultural methods of analyzing scientific literature from different parts of the world, discover a thriving research area, namely school counseling, and get involved in an exciting study involving the kingdom of Bhutan.

This seminar welcomes all students of the humanities, social and medical sciences, 4th Bachelor-semester or above, with an interest in school-based mental-health and cross-cultural psychology. While some previous experience with comprehensive reviews is preferred, participants will ultimately learn about current best practices of this important scientific method.
