Mapping Governmental Architecture: New German Borders

Leander Nowack, Technische Universität Berlin, Architektur

Inhalte

The Schengen Area has undergone a progressive process of fortification. This phenomenon has been further escalated at the national level through the implementation of measures that prioritize border control over the freedom of movement. These legal shifts have had a direct effect on space itself. The emergence of this border space is inextricably linked to the discipline of space-making. The seminar seeks to contribute to the existing discourse by critically examining the new German borders, focusing on space, objects, bodies, and actions. The course will consist of collective and individual readings and discussions, two day-long field trips to German border territories to engage in critical fieldwork and presentations of the outcomes within the group and with guests.  The seminar is open to students from any backgorund. Individual or biographical experiences of border encounters are welcome to be explored.
