Backlash Against Gender: Comparative Perspectives on Europe’s Anti-Gender Politics

Karoline Estermann, Nikolina Klatt, Katherine McGrory, Freie Universität Berlin, Otto-Suhr-Institut für Politikwissenschaft

Inhalte

Processes of autocratization and illiberalization pose significant challenges to gender equality globally. In Europe, inequality and discrimination against women remain prevalent while right-wing parties, in promoting conservative gender roles and misogynistic policies, threaten to undo the progress made in previous decades.  Our X-Student Research Group aims to study anti-gender discourse at the level of European politics and understand how democratic backsliding affects gender equality. Students will organize in small groups to develop their own research questions and methodological approaches in order to practice empirical social science. In an interdisciplinary environment, we will guide the students through the procedures of research design, data collection and text analysis (qualitative or quantitative).   Students from political science, international relations, gender studies, sociology, education, and law are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience in text analysis is advantageous, but not a requirement as the course is student-led.
