Abstract How do we assess research quality? The international science community has been striving to identify ways of capturing truly innovative ideas and research impact. The Coalition for the Advancement of Research Assessment (CoARA) at EU level is just one example of such endeavours. Ahead of the upcoming 2029 Research Excellence Framework, the UK is also planning to take greater account of the social impact of research and expanding the research environment element to include people and culture - while at the same time focussing on world-class, dynamic and responsive research. The science community agrees – scholarship should be less about numbers such as publication figures, citation rates or university rankings. What other academic contributions and activity types should be considered when assessing the academic performance of researchers or their institutions? When assessing scientific manuscripts, project proposals or funding applications, how can more attention be paid to novel ideas and truly original content? The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s mission is to bring the ‘brightest and the best’ international researchers to Germany. As such, reflecting on questions of research assessment is in the Foundation’s DNA. Together with the British Council Germany for the British academic perspective, we would like to break down this topic in a panel discussion under the aegis of the President of the Humboldt Foundation, followed by a Q&A session with the audience. We will round off the evening with a small networking reception.
Space will be limited to allow for a high level of engagement both with our panel speakers and at the reception later. Please register your participation for the event here.
