Preregistration involves defining hypotheses, methods, and analysis plans before data collection to improve research credibility and replicability. This workshop, led by Björn Siepe (University of Marburg) and Anabel Büchner (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), explores the effectiveness of preregistration, its benefits, and challenges across study designs. Targeted at researchers and graduate students in psychology or related fields, the session combines theoretical insights, practical guidance, and discussions on participants' research. No prior experience is required, but familiarity with preregistration is helpful.
Abstract: Preregistration involves specifying the hypotheses, methods, and data analysis plans of a research project before data collection or analysis. In response to the replication crisis, this practice aims to enhance research credibility and replicability. However, several questions remain: How effective is preregistration in achieving this goal? Do only certain types of studies benefit, or can it sometimes even be harmful? In this workshop, we will explore these questions by providing historical context, reviewing empirical evidence on the benefits and implementation of preregistration, and discussing theoretical foundations alongside practical challenges across various study designs. We will conclude with discussions of examples from the literature and participants' research.
Instructors: Björn Siepe (Chair for Psychological Methods, University of Marburg), Anabel Büchner (Chair for Psychological Assessment, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
Participants: The targeted audience consists of researchers or graduate students in psychology or closely related fields. While no prior knowledge is required, the workshop may be particularly interesting for researchers with experience in writing or reviewing preregistrations.
The workshop is supported by the Open Science Ambassador program of the Berlin University Alliance.
