On November 6, 2019 at 4 p.m., the new multi-university Berlin School of Optical Sciences and Quantum Technologies (BOS.QT) graduate program will officially open at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The new graduate school, a physics initiative of the Berlin universities, in cooperation with non-university research institutions, is intended to support early-career researchers on their way to a successful doctorate in the natural sciences, especially in the field of optical sciences and photonic quantum technologies. It will also bundle the multi-university support of doctoral candidates in Berlin. Technische Universität Berlin has obtained five years of funding from the Joachim Herz Foundation. It will start with over 30 graduates. At the opening ceremony, the former president of the Helmholtz Association, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Mlynek, will present the future-orientated plans of the European quantum flagship in his keynote speech. He will also deliver an outlook on the German research landscape and how it can benefit from this and other cross-national and cross-state initiatives.

The Berlin School of Optical Sciences and Quantum Technology (BOS.QT) aims to provide doctoral candidates with fascinating science and creative freedom, to stimulate innovative scientific questions, to enable inventive solutions, and to offer additional qualifications beyond scientific education. BOS.QT opens up research topics in the fields of nonlinear light-matter interactions and ultrafast dynamics, quantum optics and quantum devices, nanophotonics and photonic systems, light sources, and detector technologies.
