Forms of Belonging. The Making and Unmaking of Transnational Identities Across Afro-Asian Diasporas in Berlin

As part of the IAAW Study Day on the 14th of February 2025, Dilan Arslan, Julianne Chua, Sumona Dhakal, Sari Emoto, Morgan Johnson, Yaren Konca, Sarah Lucey, Lu’u Bích Ngọc, Anna Frehiwot Maconi, Asrin Mahmood, Claire Noa Theresin, Jaymie Wei and Jamil Zegrer will present their final projects of the interdisciplinary and inter-university X-Tutorial “Forms of Belonging: The Making and Unmaking of Transnational Identities Across Afro-Asian Diasporas in Berlin.” Through digital mind maps, prints, zines, dream cocoons, short films and documentaries, their work will delve into the meaning of community formation, contemporary practices of mourning and remembrance, the intergenerational experiences and sharing of historical traumas and the interlinkages between socio-political developments and memory politics among Afro-Asian communities and descendants in Berlin.

The event is addressed to (target group): Bachelor’s or Master’s students in literary studies, cultural studies, Asian studies, African studies, art history, anthropology, sociology, humanities and social sciences. People with migration background or interests in diaspora studies are particularly welcome.
