Starting at Alte Nationalgalerie, Dr Tea Ghigo will take you on a journey to discover the evolution of colour manufacture across history, paying particular attention to blue pigments. In a reverse chronological tour, we will look at the collections from an entirely new perspective, focusing initially on the industrial revolution of the 19th century, whose colourful products brighten up the walls of the impressionist gallery. Climbing back the ladder of history, the group will finish our tour in the Egyptian Galleries at the Altes Museum to learn all about a mysterious, fascinating pigment that is now inspiring the work of scientists and engineers alike.

About the speaker:

After obtaining her PhD in Archeometry (at the crossroads between materials science and art history) from the Universities of Hamburg and La Sapienza, in cooperation with the BAM, Dr Tea Ghigo worked as a Research Heritage Scientist at the Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford. She recently joined University College London as a Lecturer in the History of Art, Materials and Technology (Department of Art History), while maintaining an affiliation with Linacre College, Oxford, where she is presently a Research Fellow. Tea also serves as a reviewer for project proposals submitted to the UK synchrotron in the field of Cultural Heritage Analysis.
