Why do people go to museums, who feels addressed, who feels excluded? Can collections, which are primarily dedicated to the preservation of cultural and natural heritage and the transmission of knowledge, also foster social relationships? In order to understand the role of museums as institutions at the center of virulent social debates, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Technische Universität Berlin, the Museum für Naturkunde, and the Institute for Museum Research of the National Museums in Berlin have joined forces to form the interdisciplinary research network Museums and Society - Mapping the Social. Historical perspectives are combined with empirical case studies, research-based teaching, and practical interventions to think fundamentally and innovatively about museums and society.
