Auf Berlin’s größter Wasserstraße aquatische Zukünfte erkunden, diskutieren und mitgestalten: Unter dem Titel "What if the Ocean Were a City?" verlagert sich der englischsprachige ON WATER | PARCOURS am Sonntag, den 4. Mai 2025 erstmals aufs Wasser. Dazu laden wir Sie herzlich ein! 

Ein Seminarboot wird zur schwimmenden Forschungsstation: Treffen Sie auf Wissenschaftler*innen und Zukunftsgestalter*innen und werden für einen Tag selbst Zukunftsforscher*in. Gemeinsam entwickeln wir Logbücher und Karten, die mögliche Zukunftsszenarien einer blau-grünen Stadt entwerfen. 

Ausgangspunkt und theoretische Verankerung der Veranstaltung ist das Werk „Syntopolis“ in der Ausstellung im re:future lab. „Syntopolis“ ist der Prototyp eines künstlichen Riffs, der von der Designforscherin und Taucherin Rasa Weber entworfen wurde. In der Spree installiert und in Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Handwerkern entwickelt, soll sich diese lebende Struktur zu einem ökologischen Lebensraum entwickeln, der Design mit den Bedürfnissen des aquatischen Lebens verbindet. Live-Streams vom Riff werden das re:future lab in einen immersiven aquatischen Raum verwandeln, der neue Perspektiven auf urbane Wasserwege bietet.

Sonntag, 4. Mai

• 10 bis 12 Uhr:Die Reise beginnt mit einer Bootsfahrt von Berlin-Mitte nach Oberschöneweide, auf der Designer*innen, Forscher*innen und das Publikum zusammenkommen, um über Visionen für urbane Wasserlandschaften zu sprechen. 
• Designforscherin Rasa Weber diskutiert mit 
  • Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus (Professor für Integratives Fischereimanagement an Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und dem Leibniz-Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei, Integrative Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys)),
  • Prof. Dr. Nadine Göppert (Professorin für Hydrogeologie, Freie Universität zu Berlin, tbc), und
  • Laurin Kilbert (M. A. Designer, Life-Centered Design, Mitgründer Symbiotic Spaces Collective)
     
• 12 bis 16 Uhr: Das Schiff wird zu einem offenen "Floating Future Design Lab” am Kaisersteg, das Sie einlädt, sich mit laufenden Experimenten und Diskussionen an der Schnittstelle von Design, Ökologie und Urbanismus auseinanderzusetzen.
  • LET'S BECOME AQUATIC - Eine interaktive Reise in die aquatische und urbane Zukunft: Dieser Zukunftsdesign-Workshop unter der Leitung von Madeleine Schwinge und re:future lab-Stipendiaten lädt Sie ein, eine Zukunftskarte für ein blau-grünes Berlin im Jahr 2050 mitzugestalten. Verwandeln Sie das heutige urbane Ödland in neue Inseln der Hoffnung und stellen Sie sich aus der Perspektive einer zukünftigen Generation nachhaltige Lebensräume für alle vor, die die Stadt als Lebens- und Arbeitsraum teilen.
     
• 16 bis 18 Uhr: Am späten Nachmittag geht es mit dem Seminarboot für die Teilnehmenden von Oberschöneweide zurück nach Mitte. Unter dem Titel "Blau-grüne Stadtlandschaften – Diskussion aus unternehmerischer Sicht" sprechen

Samstag, 3. Mai

Am Wochenendvortag können Sie „Syntopolis“, das Werk von Designforscherin Rasa Weber,  innerhalb der Ausstellung im re:future lab entdecken:

• 10:00 - 12:30 Uhr: Workshop "What if the SPREE Were a City? Collectively Designing Aquatic Habitats" von Rasa Weber und Marie Drouet im re:future lab.
• Um 14:00 / 15:00 / 16:00 Uhr startet jeweils eine interaktive Führung durch die Ausstellung, die einen Blick hinter die Kulissen eines Experimentallabors gewährt.  Im direkten Austausch mit der Designerin und Forscherin Rasa Weber bieten diese Touren Einblicke in die Kreation von "Syntopolis".

»What if the Ocean Were a City?« is a collaboration of re:future lab and the »ON WATER | PARCOURS« series with the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as part of the ＿matter Festival 2025.

The exhibition and interactive program is hosted by re:future lab and curated by Madeleine Schwinge. re:future lab is an institute for art and future design and a school for transformation at the interfaces of art, design and futures studies, with a focus on planetary thinking and socio-cultural shifts. Through a multidimensional program spanning exhibitions, education and consulting, the re:future lab equips a new generation of future-makers with cross-disciplinary knowledge, tools and methods to tackle contemporary challenges in the ecological, social, economic and cultural spheres.

The interactive program, co-curated by Dr. Nina Samuel, is supported by the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) as part of the »ON WATER | PARCOURS« series. Alongside the TD Lab’s »ON WATER | DIALOGUE « and the exhibition »ON WATER | WasserWissen in Berlin«, which will open at the Humboldt Labor in the Humboldt Forum in October 2025, »ON WATER« forms a new focus of BUA on the topic of water research in Berlin.

The »ON WATER | PARCOURS« series cultivates a dynamic, multidirectional exchange of knowledge about Berlin’s blue-green infrastructure. Bringing together researchers from all four universities with Berliners, communities, artists and experts, it fosters collaborative research and learning. Through participatory formats and events at the intersection of art and science – held in cultural venues and along Berlin's waterways – it bridges local, global, human and non-human perspectives on water.

A key aspect of this exchange is embodied sensory knowledge that enriches scientific perspectives and expands how water is understood and experienced. In line with BUA’s commitment to socially relevant research, »ON WATER | PARCOURS« seeks to engage urban society in exploring the critical role of water, addressing pressing questions about the sustainable future of the city and the essential functions of its urban hydrosphere.

The underwater installation is located at the quay of the HTW University of Applied Sciences, Campus Wilhelminenhof, Berlin-Oberschöneweide.

The project is part of the Rasa Weber’s dissertation »SymbiOcean«, belonging to the »Interfacing the Ocean« Swiss National Science Foundation project, led by Prof. Dr. Karmen Franinović and Dr. Roman Kirschner at Zurich University of the Arts. The doctorate takes place within the practice-based program cooperation between Zurich University of the Arts and University of Arts and Design Linz, supervised by Prof. Dr. Karmen Franinović (Design) and Dr. Karin Harrasser (Cultural Theory, University of Arts and Design Linz). As an Associated Member, Rasa Weber has joined the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2022 and is part of its doctoral research cohort.

Bio

Rasa Weber is an experimental designer, researcher, and diver exploring practice-based research on the intersection of critical ecology and anthropogenic environmental change. Her work integrates design, materials research, biology, and anthropology, with a strong narrative approach and a critical ecological perspective. The ocean serves as a central focus in her design research, particularly in the context of queer ecological figurations.

She is a lecturer and researcher at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and is pursuing a practice-based PhD, «SymbiOcean», investigating artificial reefs and marine habitat creation as a form of sympoietic design. She is part of the Swiss National Science Foundation project «Interfacing the Ocean» and an associated researcher at the Cluster of Excellence «Matters of Activity» at Humboldt-University of Berlin.
